5x detailed research into film posters

5 Movie Posters
Inception

The title of the inception is in a red colour which stands out from the rest of the poster as the other colours are dark greys and blue and the bright red colour stands out from this which means that they will remember the title from this film poster. The most important features in the text around the title is in bold included ‘July 16th’ which is the release date and ‘The Dark Knight’ and they show this because it is a very successful film and they want people to know that this film should have the same amount of success. They also have the main actors above the title with the main name being ‘Leonardo Di Caprio’ which is spread out along lots of the page and they want to make it obvious that he is in this film because he has a large fan base that will want to see all of the films which he is included in. the text and image work together because the people are looking at a city collapsing and his makes you think that this can’t be real and that’s when you see the text ‘the dream is real’ and this makes you think that this must be a dream. It also asks the question who would dream about something like this? People usually have dreams where everything is positive and only a twisted person would have a dream about the world collapsing.

17 Again

The title is in red and black writing and this is also in a bold text which stands out from the rest of the text as they want the title to catch attention and stick in the audiences mind. The one actor that is shown in the sub title is Zac Efron and this is because people recognise his name from some of the others films which he has starred in so this gives the film star appeal. The catchphrase on the top ‘who says you’re only young once’ gives the idea that he gets to relive his age of 17 and maybe change how his life turns out In the future. The image of him is what a stereotypical 17 year old student looks like and this relates to the title again. The release date is in the corner and still stands out from the rest of the text so people realise when it is.

Avatar

The title of avatar is in a white colour with a blue outline and this is so that it stands out from the black background but the blue outline fits in with the rest of the blue on the poster. This movie poster is very brief and it gives the information that is most important and leaves the rest out as it is not as important. The sub title at the top suggests that the makers of the most successful film of all time ‘Titanic’ have made another film which can live up to that standard. It also has the organisations which are contributing most towards the film and people may recognise these organisations from other films which are similar. The last piece of information on the page is the website and this may be the reason why they keep minimal information on the page as they want people to visit the website to find out more information on the film and the release date. The constant colour scheme is blue, white and black and these are all simple colours which work together to create a professional feeling as there are not colours going everywhere and you can focus on certain parts without being distracted by others.

Step Up 3D
The look of the title relates to what the title actually is because the film is ‘Step up 3D’ and the title is in 3D so it shows what the whole of the film will be like. The whole poster is centred around the fact that it is in 3D and this is because it was one of the first 3D films to be released and was definitely the first 3D dance movie. It gives the names of some of the stars underneath the title but the text is so small that they don’t want you to focus on who is in the film; they want you to focus on what the film actually is. The image in the far background is of someone dancing and this is the first clue that the film is to do with dance. The closest image is of two actors who are close and from this you can tell that they are the two main focuses of the film and you can also tell that they have a relationship which will build up throughout the film.

The Final Destination
The title is in white which is a consistent colour through this poster as it is in the images as well as the text. The final destination gives the impression that it is the end of life for someone and this can also be shown by the fact that the only image which is shown in a bare skull which can show how someone is dead. The text ‘Rest in Pieces’ is a play on words as it would usually be ‘Rest in Peace’ but this shows that they won’t die in one piece, showing that it will be a torturous death. The fact that there is a mirror that is breaking on the skull can show bad luck as breaking a mirror is 7 years bad luck. The ‘August’ is in bold red writing which stands out from the consistent colours of blue and white.
