What is a teaser?

A teaser trailer, or just teaser, is a short trailer used to advertise an upcoming film, television program, video game or similar, usually released long in advance of the product, so as to "tease" the audience.

Teasers are also commonly used in advertising. The so-called teaser ad or teaser campaign typically consists of a series of small, cryptic, challenging advertisements which anticipate a large(r), full-blown campaign for a product launch or otherwise important event.

Movie teasers, unlike typical theatrical trailers, are usually very short in length (between 30–60 seconds) and usually contain little, if any, actual footage from the film. Sometimes, it is merely a truncated version of a theatrical trailer. Tester trailers are usually only made for big-budget and popularly themed movies. Their purpose is less to tell the audience about a movie's content than simply to let them know that the movie is coming up in the near future, and to add to the hype of the upcoming release. Teaser trailers are often made while the film is still in production or being edited and as a result they may feature scenes or alternate versions of scenes that are not in the finished film. Other ones (notably Pixar films) have scenes made for use in the trailer only. Teaser trailers today are increasingly focused on internet downloading and the convention circuit.

The parts which have red text are the most important parts and this is because they are features which should be followed for a teaser or are how the teaser should be advertised. The first part shows that it is used to advertise for a ‘film, television programme or video game’ and this shows how it can be used for a range of features rather than just for movies.

The second part which was highlighted was the fact that they are mainly used to ‘tease’ and this shows how it teases the audience into finding more about the film and keeping them interested rather than forgetting about the film.

The next point is that it is a small series of cryptic, challenging advertisements and this shows how they should all link to create an idea of what will be in the film and when all the teasers are put together it should create a small story about what will be in the film.

It also is very short and does not usually contain any information specific to the film and is more a general overview about the film which is coming out and the most important factor is the release date.

It is also mainly used for big-budget films and this is because they release it when they are still in production and the reason it is mainly for big budget films is because they are films which can easily be recognised by features including the music or the lighting.

It also shows that the teasers are mainly for internet download because they can be shown to a wide range of people and can be broken down by different people which mean that people can have an accurate idea of what the movie is going to be about.
